Assignment 1: Candids (due Monday, Feb 1)

Objective(s):

Record your weekend through candid photography

File Specifications:

• submit only unaltered images straight off the camera

• save as: Candid 01_Lastname.jpg, Candid 02_Lastname.jpg, Candid03_Lastname.jpg, etc.

files will be named properly after uploading into your project folder

final 20 selections will be made in class on Monday

Procedure(s):

• review notes from candid photography presentation

• take pictures that record your activities with family, friends and/or pets over the course of the weekend

• carry camera with you at all times over weekend so you are always ready for a great photo op

download all images to your flash drive at home!

do not leave images on camera- school's card readers are not working properly

Requirement(s):

• photos must be taken between 2:16 p.m. Friday, January 29 and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, January 31

• upload all photos taken over weekend

select and submit final 15 photos (no more, no less) in class on Monday

photos must be fairly evenly distributed through the weekend

for example: do not have several photos from Saturday's breakfast, then nothing else till evening that day

• images may not be altered or enhanced in any way

no cropping, color enhancement, leveling, sharpening, etc.

• all photos must be candid (general or environmental)

no photos of anyone looking at the camera

must be photos of people or pets engaged in any kind of activity (no detail shots)

for example: brushing teeth, cooking dinner, walking dog, taking nap, watching TV, shopping, etc.

• must have minimum 3 worm's-eye-view and 3 bird's-eye-view shots

• must have 1 environmental shot

location must be the compelling aspect of the photo

just taking a shot backed away from the subject does not constitute an environmental candid

Tips for Success:

• get close to your subject matter (unless environmental shots)

• take as many photos as possible

the more you take, the more you have to chose from for submission of final 20

if possible, shoot each shot from multiple angles and elevations

• take each shot in AUTO and other appropriate modes and settings whenever possible

this will help insure you get the shot you need at the right exposure

for example: when taking a photo of your dad reading the newspaper in his favorite chair, shoot under auto, portrait and various manual settings such as different ISOs

• be creative

remember... the most important question you can ask yourself when taking a shot is "what if...?"

shoot subject from above or below

rotate around subject and shoot from various angles

• be aware of your background

do not let anything behind your subject ruin your photo
